“Artists document and chronicle the world as it is, we also (re)imagine offering alternative worlds.” Patricia Leavy
I was born and raised near the water and nature has always been a real inspiration for me in my work. I fell in love with working with clay the moment I sat at the wheel in 9th grade. I studied ceramics at Pratt Institute and later worked for a variety of sculpting and model making studios throughout New York City. Today I am working with natural fibers, charcoals and paint and my forever love, clay. I’m also an art educator grades 6-12. I love history, photography, and age old crafts techniques, especially felting and weaving. Working with materials like clay and raw natural fibers allow me to embrace with and connect to centuries of tradition in a modern art form. I’m mostly drawn to the organic renewability of materials like clay and natural fibers having great respect for the history and origin of the craft. Working with cruel free animal fiber along with various plant fibers allow me to stay true to my passion for sustainability. Through both traditional and modern felting techniques, I’m able to manipulate the fiber from it’s once vulnerable beginning to it’s final solid state. Creating something tangible from a pile of fleece or bamboo. I love the tactility of the wet felting process and it’s eternal connection to nature and the animal it once belonged to, a simple yet ambiguous and magical transformation.
Painting and working with color is a magical experience, unable to put into words the feeling and emotions we can translate through color, line and texture. Building and removing layers, letting my work evolve to create a new and different space. Drawn to ethereal and organic shapes and forms that remind us of what we see in nature but take us on a journey into a dreamlike fantasy. Create your world.
